MARKETING TIP #063
Sam Walton's Wisdom

Bob Vanderhook, VP of Sales & Marketing at Furmano Foods, recently shared these words of wisdom from Sam Walton. Here’s Walton’s advice to executives and managers on how to succeed.

  1. Believe in your business more than anyone else, and commit yourself to that belief.
  2. Share your profits with your associates, and treat them as partners.
  3. Motivate your partners. Set up competitions and hand out rewards.
  4. Tell your partners everything you know. Don’t hold back. The more they know, the more they’ll understand. The more they understand, the more they’ll care. Once they care, they’ll produce miracles.
  5. Show appreciation for everything your partners do for the business. Everyone needs to be told how well they’re doing.
  6. Celebrate success. Find humor in your failures. And above all, don’t take yourself too seriously.
  7. Listen to everyone in your company. And figure out ways of getting them talking.
  8. Go beyond your customer’s expectations. Give them everything they want – and more.
  9. Control your expenses better than your competition.
  10. Swim upstream. Go the other way. Ignore conventional wisdom. If everyone is doing it one way, then maybe you should consider doing it the opposite.

Sam Walton had one other rule he used as well: “Break all the rules!”
