MARKETING TIP #046
What's New on the Web?

Lisa Griegel of ThomasNet.com (of Thomas Register origin) is a walking encyclopedia of what’s new on the Net. Here’s what I learned in a meeting with her last week:

  • Most search engines today are doing their own research and registration through electronic spiders. Google, for example, sends out spiders in search of key words every day and does the deep crawl one time a month.
  • The average user searches 40 times a month, resulting in six billion searches a month. This is a 40% increase over 2004.
  • 50% of all users start their Internet sessions with a search.  Market share shakes out like this:
    • Google 46%
    • Yahoo 23%
    • MSN  11%
    • AOL   6%
    • Excite 4%
  • Search Engines index or fixate on two areas:
    • Text, text matches (12%), site population (inbound links) and traffic to your site
    • Meta tags, title tags, descriptions, keywords, img alts and headers
  • The average search is for three words. Industrial purchasing agents and engineers spend 5 – 20 hours a week in searches.
  • Blogs? There are 40,000 new ones a day! Blogs help to optimize and keep data fresh for searches.

Talking with Lisa is like drinking from a fire hose in terms of getting the latest and greatest on the web and searches.
