Marketing Lessons from the Game of Golf
I've been getting ready for the golf season - took a lesson, started putting in my living room, been watching the pros every weekend - and I've discovered some lessons for the marketer from the game of golf.
1.) Focus is critical. With crowds of people watching, tons of noisy distractions plus their own thoughts, the professional golfer has to focus and make every shot count. It's the same for the professional marketer: Every action counts; the market seldom forgives.
2.) Conditions change constantly. The wind picks up, the greens dry out, or the sun is in your eyes; on the golf course conditions always change. Even so, the pro adjusts so that he still gets results. The same happens with the professional marketer. He watches the market closely and adjusts accordingly because he, too, is responsible for results.
3.) It only takes one point to win, but that point can make a difference of millions of dollars. Professional golfers work hard before the game because they know all of those practice shots make a big difference when the game's on. I read recently that Vijah Singh hits over a thousand balls a day. That's a lot of practice shots. Professional marketers do the same: Practice, practice, practice, and get it right. They know the difference a share point can make.
